be your own good news

be your own good news

My husband brushed his index finger along a faint line running the height of one of our favorite bowls. He confirmed we wouldn’t have to remove it from our daily rotation but cautioned against the microwave, fearing the possibility of too much strain on an already weakened vessel.

I wonder if my frame has resembled that cereal bowl with its slow-forming fissure. Month by month, I have learned to renew my need to move through each day with gentleness as if any extra strain might deepen my cracks. Even as melodramatic as it feels for me to describe in writing, haven’t our inner workings felt fragile?

Two pieces of good news crossed my path last week, unexpected in both cases. One arrived by email and another by voice. Each one only of interest to those tickled by the words but after absorbing these utterances, I suddenly felt elated, an emotion I hadn’t experienced in nearly a year and a half.

During this patch of challenges and life quakes, I have grown unaccustomed to the gift of receiving good news. But once received and embraced, my soul was provided with some much-needed scaffolding.

Remember when I wrote about tracking joy?

Well, today my encouragement is to be on the lookout for good news.

Good news doesn’t have to be of the winning lottery ticket variety. It could be finally laying eyes on a  family member or your child finishing a year and a half of unconventional school participation.  It could be a full refrigerator or eating in a favorite restaurant that survived the roller coaster of restrictions.

If you are stumped to find bits of goodness falling over your life, maybe borrow someone else’s.

There is an Instagram account I relentlessly scoured during the height of Covid.

The account only shares stories of good news. Each posting will bring a smile, a giggle, or a sense of awe about all the goodness residing in this world despite so many hard parts.

Let good news find you.

Let stories of goodness remind you of what is already present in your life.

You might discover a new definition of good news.

You might discover each piece of good news acting as epoxy for every stress point and line.

Sometimes, you are the very best news of the day.
